Sexual abuse within the family environment
Recognising and working with the traumatic implications

Saturday 27th June 2015
10.00am – 4.00pm

The majority of child sexual abuse and sexual violence occurs within the family environment and remains largely hidden.

This workshop will examine the range of sexual abuse within the family including sexual abuse by mothers, siblings, grandparents, partners and extended family members and how to recognise the signs and symptoms. It will enhance awareness of the range of sexual abuse, what happens when children experience fear without solution and how this leads to traumatic bonding and dissociation.

Emphasis will be placed on developing a deeper understanding of the long term traumatic implications such as post-traumatic stress disorder, fragmented memories, inability to trust, shame, and compromised sexuality can lead to relationship difficulties and a range of self-harming behaviours including addictions and how to work with these.

The focus will be on exploring the most effective therapeutic approaches, including right-brain based techniques to equip health professionals, practitioners, therapists and counsellors to understand survivors of CSA within the family and aid them in their recovery and healing.
